The drive to collect funds to construct a union building honoring IU community members who had served in the US military during times of war was begun in 1929. The building was completed in 1931. It has since been expanded and now contains more than 500,000 square feet.
This fierce serpent guards the entrance to Maxwell Hall. The building is highly ornamented and displays the talent of the area's limestone stone carvers. It is now a center for the arts and humanities.
